Flames flickered behind Lily’s closed eyes, and she once again found herself engulfed in the chaotic world of fire. The scent of smoke filled her nostrils, as the low squeal of the building’s metal framework twisting echoed in her ears.

Lily stood before a decrepit three-story building—its once magnificent structure showing its age, tired and creaky with boarded-up windows. Flames danced from one wooden pane to the next, hungrily devouring what remained of its decaying walls.

But this fire was different. As the dream unfolded, her heart raced. Her hand covered her mouth when the outline of two figures appeared in a window on the top floor.

Like a movie, her vision zoomed in until she saw their faces etched with desperation and fear. A woman and child. Their eyes pleaded for help, their screams drowned by the roaring fire beneath them.

Where are you? Tell me where you are!

She reached out toward them, yearning to save them, but her voice was swallowed by the engulfing inferno.

Lily woke, her eyes wide in the darkness. Sweat beaded on her forehead, her breath uneven. She jolted upright and stumbled into the sweats she dropped on top of the laundry hamper last night. Her mind worked on connecting the fragments of her dream.

The building. It was there, on the edge of her memory. Familiar, but how? It wasn’t on any of her regular routes to work or grocery shopping. She grabbed her bag, keys, a jacket and headed out.

She didn’t know where and was counting on driving around until she figured it out or smelled smoke. Not the most efficient way, but it was the only thing she could think of.

She called up Mac’s number on the car display.

The call went straight to voicemail.

Right. He was working tonight. “Mac.” Her voice came out husky, panicked. “I had another dream about a fire… a three-story building with boarded-up windows. I think it’s happening now, or about to happen. I don’t know where it is, but Mac, there are people inside! A woman and a child. I’m going to drive around. Maybe I’ll get lucky and stumble across it. Crazier things have happened, right? I can’t just sit here and do nothing. If I figure out the location, I’ll call it in. Call me when you get this.”

“Think, Lily. Think.” At first, her view of the fire was from farther away. There weren’t any other buildings in the image. That meant what? It had to be on the outskirts of the city with that much open land.

Lily passed the exit sign for Highway Sixteen. Wait. There was a section of the city to the east that had a lot of abandoned buildings. She’d gone there… to a salvage shop with Alana when she was looking for corbels during her house remodel.

That was a good thirty minutes out, though.

She couldn’t make an official call until she got there and confirmed it was the right place. She rolled down her windows, hoping for the smell of smoke. She doubted she’d see the smoke itself out there in the dark.
